Emporio village

A village of great population almost 9 km from Fira. Its location, in the centre of the thiraic open country, gives the village the advantage of a wonderful view to both sides of the island.

Picturesque houses and paths encircled by old classic mansions decorate the village spreading its beauty everywhere. During the Venetian occupation, Emporio was one of the five fortified areas of Santorini. To the north one can observe Goulas, a powerful castle, protecting back then the citizens from pirate attacks, while according to tradition, it was some monks from St.John`sof Patmos Convent, who built the castle.

Built more recently, still of great beauty, is the church of Evangelismos.Walking along the hill of the village the visitor can only be charmed by the amazing windmills. Emporio also had a fortified castle during the medieval years, vestiges of which are still visible.
